How to Pick a Car to Convert to Tesla Power

From Autoweek

While still a student at Bergen Community College in New Jersey in 2013, Sam Polyak converted his $200 junkyard 1992 Mazda MX-3 to electric drive. That worked so well he took on bigger game: building a 2010 all-wheel-drive Audi S5 with Tesla power.

Out came the tired V8 and in went a motor and inverter from a P85D Model S, producing a car that could reach 60 mph in 3.9 seconds. Also using the Tesla’s full 16-module battery pack yielded 250 miles of range but required sacrificing the back seat. And there were plenty of challenges to get all the systems to play nice in the car—and for the Audi’s many modern conveniences to actually function.

“It’s a whole lot easier to convert a pre-1996 car,” said Polyak, who now runs PolyKup, a shop in West Haverstraw, New York, that converts cars and

Someone snagged this classic Japanese supercar on the cheap.

*Updated Story* An exceptionally clean 1991 Honda NSX – that’s a JDM-spec, first-production-year model – crossed the auction block at GAA Classic Car Auctions with no reserve. When the bidding stopped, a lucky individual scooped the car for a mere $36,000. While the exact market value of the car could be debated, that price is well below most estimates. With NSX values on the rise, whomever grabbed this supercar got a tremendous deal.

*Original Story* Thanks to the whole COVID-19 shutdown situation, there seems to have been a bit of a disruption in flow of Japanese domestic market vehicles to the United States. Those in the know are always keen to scoop up clean, rare examples of these right-hand-drive models since they’re becoming increasingly collectible. One of the most desirable of these JDM

Nasr, Derani elated by “awesome” pace at Sebring

The third round of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship was a 2hr40min event at the venue which will hold its classic 12 Hour race unusually late in the season – November 14, the season finale – due to the knock-on effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

Unlike at the previous round at Daytona which was dominated by the Mazda RT-24Ps, the Cadillacs appeared stronger around the 17-turn 3.74-mile Sebring course, and the #31 Whelen Engineering car was unstoppable. Derani took pole and easily beat fellow front-row starter Juan Pablo Montoya in the Acura into the first corner.

Thereafter, pitstops aside, the AXR entry which also won the 2019 Sebring 12 Hours never looked under severe threat, as the similar car of Wayne Taylor Racing was apparently unable to match the leader’s pace.

“I think this place likes me,” commented Derani. “This is my fourth win in five attempts at Sebring. Obviously,

An Icon Is Born

In the late Eighties, Mazda set out to produce a sporty two-seat convertible aimed directly at the affordable performance segment. It had three initial designs: a front-engine front-wheel-drive car, a front-engine rear-wheel-drive car, and a mid-engine rear-wheel-drive car. In the end, executives chose the front-engine, rear-drive layout. The first production Miatas went on sale in 1989 as 1990 model-year cars after debuting at the Chicago Auto Show.

Early NA Miatas use a 1.6-liter naturally aspirated inline-four
